Statewide Week of Service To Be Held October 19-24, 2015 The GAWL Foundation’s Statewide Week of Service will take place from October 19-24, 2015. The purpose of the Statewide Week of Service is to encourage GAWL members, chapters, neighborhood networking breakfasts, mentoring circles, affinity groups, and leadership academy classes to participate in community-related projects in furtherance of the GAWL Foundation's mission of encouraging philanthropy by women lawyers in Georgia for the benefit of the greater community. The GAWL Foundation will host several service opportunities during the week of October 19-24, including the following:

Metro Atlanta

 · Tuesday, October 20: Volunteer Project at the Nicholas House – Join us on Tuesday, October 20, from 7:15 – 8:30 p.m., for a fall-themed arts and crafts activity with the children of the Nicholas House while their parents participate in a training program. The Nicholas House, a unique shelter in Grant Park, provides homeless families with housing and services that assist in the achievement of self-sufficiency.  · Thursday, October 22: Athena’s Warehouse Career Fair – GAWL volunteers will support an Athena’s Warehouse-organized career fair at Cross Keys High School, located in Brookhaven. The career fair seeks to expose high school seniors to professionals from a variety of fields. Volunteers will assist with event set up from 8 – 10 a.m., and a volunteer will conduct mock interviews with students from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. A recipient of a recent GAWL Foundation grant, Athena's Warehouse is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating and empowering underserved teen girls in the Atlanta area through programs that focus on personal development, career preparation, and community engagement.  · Thursday, October 22: Atlanta Community Food Bank Volunteer Project - On Thursday, October 22 from 5:45 – 8:30 p.m., GAWL volunteers will help sort and organize donations in the Product Rescue Center of the Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB). Founded in 1979, ACFB procures more than 60 million pounds of food and groceries each year and distributes it to more than 600 non-profit partner agencies serving families and individuals in 29 Georgia counties.  · Saturday, October 24: Global Growers Volunteer Project - Join GAWL as we volunteer with Global Growers from 10 am – 1 pm at Umurima, the Burundi women's farm located in Decatur, where we will assist with farm operations. Feel free to bring your children to this project! Global Growers seeks to create opportunities in sustainable agriculture in Georgia by growing good food, training farmers, and providing economic opportunity with a special focus on working with individuals and families who have come to metro-Atlanta as legal refugees. Valdosta

 · Tuesday, October 20: Volunteer with Miracle League in Valdosta – Join the Valdosta chapter on Tuesday, October 20, 2015 at 5:30 p.m. at Freedom Park to cheer on the Miracle League baseball teams and provide snacks for the players. The Miracle League removes the barriers that keep children with mental and physical disabilities off the baseball field and lets them experience the joy of America’s favorite pastime.  · TBD: Create Photo Booth to Support D.A.R.E. – The Valdosta chapter will be gathering during the Week of Service to create and decorate a Christmas photo booth for families and their animals for a fundraiser for D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education). D.A.R.E., a police officer-led series of classroom lessons for children from kindergarten through 12th grade, gives children the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence. Savannah

 · The Savannah Chapter will be participating in the GAWL Statewide Week of Service by collecting donations throughout the week for SAFE Shelter, one of the largest domestic violence shelters in the State of Georgia that provides shelter for victims of domestic violence as well as their children.  Savannah chapter members will be collecting items like shampoo, soap, other toiletries, and paper products to donate to the shelter.
