The Leaky Pipeline and It’s About Time

GAWL commissioned the 2017 “Leaky Pipeline” Study to examine factors underlying the “leaky pipeline” for women in the legal field – why do women advance at a lower rate than men and why do women leave the profession at a higher rate than men.

The results of this study indicate that traditional attitudes toward gender roles remain, both within the value system we retain individually and in the policies and practices we uphold organizationally. Most American families are headed by dual-earner couples, yet their struggles to “balance” reflect many important misalignments and mismatches between their everyday realities and the structures they navigate. Organizations can do more to support them by adjusting the underlying structures of work, where possible, to better align with modern realities.

GAWL's "It's About Time" study delves into the attitudes and experiences of law firms and attorneys concerning part-time and flexible work arrangements. Part One of the study in 2004 focuses on Atlanta law firms and attorneys. Part Two of the study in 2008 includes law firms and attorneys throughout the state. Part Two also analyzes whether progress has been made in the acceptance of part-time and flexible work arrangements, and it offers suggestions to aid law firms in the successful implementation of part-time and flexible work policies.
