ABOUT OUR ORGANIZATION

Founded in 1928, the Georgia Association for Women Lawyers ("GAWL") proudly serves the diverse interests of women lawyers around Georgia.   GAWL has been pioneering for women lawyers for 80 years, staying true to its mission to enhance the welfare and development of women lawyers and to support their interests.  GAWL’s founders included Minnie Hale Daniel (President, 1928-1929), the first woman to graduate from law school in Georgia, and Betty Cobb Reynolds (President 1929-1930), the first woman to pass the Georgia State bar examination.  Click here to read more about GAWL's unique history.

GAWL is a statewide bar organization with regional and national affiliations.  Local chapters exist in Atlanta, Columbus, Savannah, South Atlanta, Augusta, Gwinnett and at John Marshall Law School.  GAWL plays a key role in the advancement of women lawyers' interests throughout the state.  GAWL has a strong, bipartisan voice on issues such as judicial nomination process, legislative affairs, work-life balance issues, and on the education, training and sponsorship of women lawyers to take their rightful place as leaders in the state of Georgia.

GAWL's members include women judges, inhouse counsel, attorneys at large, medium and small firms, solo practitioners, public service and governmental attorneys, women attorneys who are not currently actively practising law, and law students.  We also have male attorney members and a limited number of members who are not attorneys, but who are valued members of our business community. 

We seek to present programs and opportunities that meet the needs and interests of our very diverse membership.  Signature events include the Annual Dinner, the Leadership Academy, and the Annual Art Auction Gala, which is hosted by the GAWL Foundation. Our members highly value our very popular Neighborhood Networking Breakfasts, our monthly lunches, business and leadership training, mentoring circles and affinity groups.

GAWL communicates to its members on its cutting-edge website, through quarterly newsletters published by the Fulton County Daily Report, monthly e-newletters, and in regular broadcast E-mails.  GAWL is dedicated to using the latest technology to communicate with its members and to present women lawyers with valuable resources and opportunities. GAWL also compiles an annual Membership Directory containing client-referral information for all members, which also is available online.
